Bucim Joins “Generalka Weekend” for the Fourth Year: Inclusiveness and Environmental Care Through Collective Action

As part of its long-term commitment to sustainable development and social responsibility, Bucim mine participated for the fourth consecutive year in the national environmental initiative Generalka Weekend, and for the second year as an official partner of MAM. This year, the initiative gained additional social value through the inclusive participation of beneficiaries from the Daily Center for People with Intellectual Disabilities “Poraka” from Radovish.

Together, Bucim employees and the young people from Poraka sent a strong message – that protecting the environment and supporting vulnerable groups are not separate goals, but interconnected aspects of a responsible and inclusive society.

The cleanup activities were carried out at several locations near Radovish and around Bucim’s operational areas, during which significant amounts of waste were collected and sorted, highlighting the importance of proper waste management and recycling.

“Generalka Weekend is not just a cleanup action – it is a symbol of responsibility, solidarity, and our determination to make a tangible difference for nature and the community. We are especially proud that this year, through our partnership with MAM and the inclusion of Poraka, we demonstrated that sustainable development must also be inclusive. At Bucim, this is not just a duty, but a value we live by every day, Kristina Krsteva, Deputy Managing Director for Sustainable Development

Participation in Generalka Weekend 2025 is just one example of how Bucim implements ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles in practice, as part of its long-term strategy to improve environmental protection, community support, and responsible corporate behavior.

Spring Reforestation Initiative: Bucim and Borov Dol Plant 4,000 Trees

As part of their long-term sustainable development strategy, the Bucim and Borov Dol mines once again marked the arrival of spring with an environmental reforestation initiative. Through active employee involvement and a systematic approach to environmental protection and enhancement, the company continues its contribution toward creating a greener and more sustainable future for the local community and the broader region.

This initiative represents a continuation of a multi-year effort for ecological rehabilitation of the concession area of DPTU Borov Dol DOOEL, launched in 2021. To date, a total of 4,000 saplings have been planted—2,600 black locust and 1,400 black pine—focused on restoring degraded or non-functional areas in and around the mining facilities.

In the first year of the initiative, 2021, 500 saplings were planted beneath the dam crown. In 2022, another 500 saplings were planted around the administrative complex and the ore warehouse, aiming to improve the ecological environment surrounding the administrative buildings. The year 2023 saw a significant expansion of activities—1,500 trees were planted around key facilities: the parking lot, the warehouse, the mechanical workshop, and the primary crushing plant. In 2024, the reforestation effort continued with an additional 1,500 trees planted along the road leading to the main entrance of the mine, creating a natural green belt.

Our vision is clear – we aim to achieve long-term positive impact, not only through economic contributions but also through responsible environmental management. Reforestation is a key element of our long-term commitment to ecological balance and responsible land stewardship,” said Alexander Rakov, General Manager of the Bucim and Borov Dol mines.

Bucim at the “Energy of Success” Event: Women Are the Present of Mining

As part of the event “Energy of Success: Where Women Create, the Future Changes”, organized by the Ministry of Energy, Mining, and Mineral Resources, women from the Bucim and Borov Dol mines also took part. The event, held at Europe House Skopje, brought together over 50 women leaders from the energy and mining sectors. It served as a platform for sharing inspiring stories, experiences, and visions, aiming to break stereotypes and open space for female leadership in industries traditionally considered “male-dominated.”

Currently, there are 70 women working in the Bucim and Borov Dol mines, representing more than 11% of the total workforce. These women are not only part of the administrative staff, but also work as mechanical and chemical engineers, geologists, operators, technicians, laboratory workers, and department managers. Out of a total of 59 managerial positions, 13 are held by women, making up 22% representation. In the top management team, one out of four members is a woman, representing 25%.

Speaking as one of the panelists, Kristina Krsteva, Deputy Mаnaging Director for Sustainable Development at Bucim and Borov Dol, emphasized that gender equality should not be treated as an abstract concept, but as a continuous process of building a culture of equity — from the production floors to the highest leadership positions. “In an industry long perceived as male-dominated, the presence of 70 women is a sign that we are moving in the right direction. To be an educated and successful woman in a so-called ‘male sector’ means being a driver of change and opening doors for future generations of women. Our goal is not only personal success, but to help create a more inclusive and dynamic sector that recognizes talent, quality, and competence — regardless of gender,” said Krsteva.

Through their active support of gender balance and continuous advancement of women in the industry, the Bucim and Borov Dol mines are establishing themselves as companies that not only embrace change — but lead it. They are an example of modern mining that places the values of inclusion, equality, and sustainability at the core of its mission. The “Energy of Success” event was not just a celebration of achievements — but a strong call to collective action toward a more inclusive, fair, and prosperous future for all, where every voice is heard, and every potential is valued.
